In an unprecedented stunt Radiohead are set to change the rules of the music industry.
It was announced that their new album called ‘Rainbows’ is finished and is available for download starting the 10th of October from their website. The album comes in 2 flavours. The digital version does not have a set price. You may specify how much you’re willing to pay and pre-order it right now. That’s right, you pay as much as you want.
The physical version will only be available of the 3rd of December and will consist of many goodies. Apart for the CD, you will get 2 vinyl versions of the album, along with a bonus CD with extra songs. Radiohead will also throw in a hardback book, photographs, lyrics and artwork. The catch? It costs £40 which translates to around 80 bucks.
If you’re thinking “hmm, the MP3’s are going to be all over the net in 10 days” you may be right. I urge you to buy the album though, and take part in changing the way albums are being sold. Radiohead have chosen not to sign with a record label, and are in fact the biggest unsigned band in the world. This means that if this experiment succeeds, other bands may join in on the fun and bring down record prices. If artists don’t have to pay the premium labels are demanding nowadays (which can come up to 80% of the revenue), they can afford to keep the costs down while giving you the fan great music for cheap that also doesn’t finance evil cartels like the RIAA.
Mine’s already on order for the price of an average record on Amazon. Go get it!
